Rev. Jesse Larson led today’s service, which marked the fourth Sunday in Advent. The Advent wreath—featuring the Candle of Love—was lit by members of the Ogata-Medina-Beutler family. Rev. Judy Davis presented a sermon entitled “The Mapmaker’s Holy Way.” In a special slide show he called “What Child is This,” Rev. Jesse had everyone guessing the identity of Bethany members and friends in childhood pictures.
Today’s scripture, read by Rev. Janice Kamikawa, was Isaiah 35: 1-10.
The Bethany Choir, under the direction of Nga Ong, performed the anthem “The Little Drummer Boy” as Alexander Medina portrayed the boy with his humble drum. Manh Ong helped accompany the choir on his guitar.
The baptism of Leo Grassadonia, grandson of Bethany member Steve Crooks and wife Cindy Cooke, and son of Caitlin and Michael Grassadonia took place. Jim Guida invited all children present to participate in a special “moment with the children,” during which he talked about the special gifts God has given to all—including the famed reindeer Rudolph. He then gave each child a red nose to keep.
Pianist Natalya Guerrero presented several musical arrangements and accompanied the singing of hymns:
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
In the Bleak Midwinter
While We Are Waiting, Come
O Little Town of Bethlehem
A soup and tamale lunch took place after the service to celebrate Christmas.
