February 8 was recognized at Bethany as “Self-Development of People Sunday,” celebrating the Presbyterian Church SDOP ministry (of which Rev. Janice Kamikawa is a part). SDOP partners with poor, oppressed and disadvantaged communities to foster economic independence and justice.
According to Rev. Dr. Alonzo Johnson, SDOP Manager, “This is what it means to follow the gospel of Jesus in bringing the Good News to all; it is recognizing that human equity, anti-poverty and self-determination go hand in hand. In the words of the late Peruvian theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez — the father of Liberation Theology — ‘there is no authentic evangelization that is not accompanied by action on behalf of the poor.’”
The Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People is a ministry that affirms God’s concern for humankind. Click below to read the 2026 SDOP yearbook, which highlights some of the important work being done by this committee!
Your contributions to the Presbyterian “One Great Hour of Sharing” offering (collected on Easter) will partly benefit the work of SDOP. You may pick up an offering envelope starting March 15.
