Bethany’s April 7, 2024, worship service observed an old Easter custom begun by the early Greek Christians: "Holy Humor Sunday," held the Sunday after Easter. For centuries, in various Christian faith traditions, the week following Easter Sunday was observed by the faithful as "days of joy and laughter" with parties to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.
At the service, funny hats, sunglasses, t-shirts and other items were worn by numerous attendees—including Rev. Jesse Larson (he wore bobble-ears!) And there were mustachioed children, thanks to the ever-creative Jim Guida. During his kids’ message, Jim presented mustache-and-glasses-disguises—a reminder that nothing can prevent God from truly seeing and loving His people.
Rev. Jesse spoke about the need for keeping joy and laughter in uncertain times. In addition to telling a few jokes, he emceed “open mike time” with participants sharing their own favorites. (Ask Ron Carlson, Kathy Frank, Jackie Sneed and Sherry McHurd Hanson to repeat them to you!)
