Rev. Jesse Larson led today’s service, which celebrated the triumph of life over death. Bethany observed an old Easter custom begun by the early Greek Christians: "Holy Humor Sunday" held the Sunday after Easter. For centuries, in various Christian faith traditions, the week following Easter Sunday was observed by the faithful as "days of joy and laughter" with parties to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.
Everyone was invited to dress informally and wear funny clothes or hats. Jokes were shared during the sermon portion of the service and Jim Guida surprised all by appearing sans trousers (but wearing formal top hat and tails).
Scripture readings included Psalms 8:1-5 and Luke 24:13-35.
Pianist Natalya Guerrero presented several musical arrangements and accompanied the singing of hymns:
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
Shine, Jesus, Shine!
Go, Tell it On the Smartphone
