A new five-week book study is taking place Thursdays via Zoom from 3-4:30 p.m. starting June 27, ending August 1. The book being discussed is Subversive Witness: Scripture's Call to Leverage Privilege, written by Dominique DuBois Gilliard, Director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation of the Evangelical Covenant Church in the greater Chicago area. Jackie Sneed, chair of Bethany’s Spiritual Formation Commission, is taking requests for free copies of the book. Call or e-mail the church office if you are interested and need the Zoom link.
Dr. Béatrice Russell will facilitate the weekly discussions, with guest speakers to be announced.
Subversive Witness explores how "unchecked privilege prevents us from seeing that we are inherently connected to one another." It uses biblical figures like Pharaoh’s daughter, Esther, Paul and Silas, Zacchaeus, and Jesus as models for emulation in our modern context, promoting faithful participation in God's Kingdom.
Through these biblical characters, the book covers:
Identifying and explaining privilege and its power.
Using privilege to resist systemic sin.
Using privilege to create systemic change.
Abandoning and leveraging privilege to proclaim the Good News.
Using privilege to foster social transformation.
Producing fruits in keeping with repentance.
Each online gathering will be held at 3 p.m. on the following Thursdays:
June 27
July 11
July 18
July 25
August 1
Several Bethany members had the opportunity to meet the author last October and were very impressed by his message.
