Worship Service • First Sunday in Advent • Nov. 29, 2020

Rev. Jesse Larson lights the “Candle of Hope” signifying the start of advent, the lead-up to Christmas.

Today’s interesting bible passage—Mark 13: 24-37—appears to have no relation to the “Christmas story,” says Rev. Jesse. But he goes on to explain that in Latin, advent means "coming.” In our culture, this is a season of hopeful expectation. We not only remember and commemorate the birth of Jesus … but look ahead to the time when he will return, bringing peace and justice to all.

We can use the time of advent to treasure the potential each day offers, including growing and sustaining relationships. Today's verse reminds us to live fully each day.

Pianist Natalya Amelchenko blesses the service with her presentation of several classic and contemporary Christmas pieces, including:

  • Christmas Lullaby

  • Bethlehem Calls: An Advent Reflection

  • Of the Father's Love Begotten

  • Thanks for the Blessings You Give

  • Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming

  • Gloria in Excelsior Deo
