Rev. Jesse Larson led today’s service, which observed an old Easter custom begun by the early Greek Christians: "Holy Humor Sunday," held the Sunday after Easter. For centuries, in various Christian faith traditions, the week following Easter Sunday was observed by the faithful as "days of joy and laughter" with parties to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.
Funny hats, sunglasses, t-shirts and other items were worn by numerous attendees. Rev. Jesse spoke about the need for keeping joy and laughter in uncertain times. In addition to telling a few jokes, he emceed “open mike time” with participants sharing their own favorites.
Jim Guida presented a moment with the children that saw each presented a pretend mustache and silly glasses—a reminder that no disguise can ever prevent God from seeing and loving His people.
Rev. Rick Hull, chair of the Presbytery Administrative Commission appointed to work with Bethany in its planning, introduced members of the commission. He told how the commission is working alongside Bethany’s current elected leadership team to determine if and how the church can continue as a worshiping community despite its membership decline and funding challenges. Due to budget constraints, Sunday, April. 28, will be Rev. Jesse’s last day in the pulpit at Bethany. A congregational meeting will be held after the April 28 worship service to dissolve the terms of his call as pastor.
Bible readings were Psalms 133:1-3 and 1 John 1:1-2:2.
Hymns, accompanied by pianist Natalya Guerrero and guitarist Manh Van Ong, included:
Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee
Shine, Jesus, Shine
I Come with Joy, A Child of God
Come! Live in the Light!
Communion, presided over by Rev. Jesse Larson and Rev. Janice Kamikawa, was served. Donations of canned and packaged goods for the SSIP Food Closet were collected.
