Who is Ruth? Ruth is one of the most important women in the Bible. (She even has a book of the Bible named after her!) In Bible days, women whose husbands had died traditionally returned to live in the home of their own parents. The newly widowed Ruth, however, had come to love her mother-in-law—Naomi—and her new country so much … that she decided to stay and make her life with Naomi. Ruth said to Naomi: “Wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1: 16)

Through Ruth’s story, we learn how important it is to welcome newcomers … and to help newcomers feel at home in their new surroundings. Communication—speaking, listening, responding—is a very important part of growing in the “garden” to which we have been transplanted.
